It's hard sometimes but really the only person you can change is you. This post is sparked by the election of our new President and the idea of change he and his family bring.
Let me preface it by my own experience as a Black woman, as a mixed woman.
Yesterday my co-worker asked me if I was a girl scout when I was young. So my response was "well I grew up in the hood, we didn't have girl scouts." Now there is no bitterness in this statement, just truth. So she said to me "How could you have lived in the hood with a white mother?" So what could I say? I mean really. My mother was poor. My mother was on welfare. I was homeless at one point due to domestic violence against my mother. And yea she was white. Is that surprising? Do you really believe it is an exception to a (false) rule that you have to be a minority for your life to be like that?
With the election of our first African-American president and a first family that includes both parents who are smart and successful, poised and classy and children who are well groomed and well behaved, the sentiment is that now we as black people have an example of what we all should want in our lives. Role models for our children. So people all over the place screaming "well if you as a woman want a man like Obama you need to be like Michelle", "if you want the Obamas to be role models then as parents be more active and stop letting your children watch and become what they see on BET."
Ok what I think needs to happen is every single person needs to sit down and reflect what this means to them as an individual. They also need to get rid of those preconceived ideas. Yes Michelle inspires me. She inspires me to be successful, classy and poised and be an awesome mom when the time arrives. I don't want to do it because I want an "Obama man" No matter what anyone says I deserve the best no matter who is president, we all do. And I believed that before Michelle came along. I went to college and always worked hard because I want to succeed.
I think its awesome that we as a country, we as black people, we as men and woman and children have an awesome role model in our President and First Family. I think it should inspire everyone to see that anything is possible. But it all starts with whats inside of you. Make the change within yourself. Be inspired and motivated. And discover what your individual role can be in this time of change and lets move forward!
